Google has rolled Public Data into their Labs, allowing users to look at all sorts of data by state or country. Key metrics like internet access per 100 people, STD rates by state/sex, CO2 emissions per capita can all be easily aggregated and charted. Have a look!

Thinking about the human in digital

Friday, December 4th, 2009

The power in advertising has shifted from the brands to the consumer; if you build it, they won’t necessarily come. Now we are forced to provide value to the consumer, giving them something they want, not just what we think they need.

Because of this, we now need to start building content for the consumer’s wants and needs, not just for the brand’s needs. In short, we need to “understand human behaviour on the web and build sites and applications that work with those behaviours, not against them.”

This presentation by the guys at Jet Cooper goes a long way in helping to understand that there is in fact a human at the other end of everything digital we do. That human can make or break a brand’s success, so we need to everything we can to make their experience an engaging and pleasant one.

The consumer is now driving the ship, we need to do everything we can to get on board.

It is an opportunity for out-of-home suppliers to show off their latest products and for reps and buyers alike to meet and network. This year zig’s very own Eugenia Kung was one of four finalists for out-of-home planner of the year! To get a taste of what the event was like, check out this feature on notabletv.com. And yes, that’s yours truly at the :47 mark.

Three Must-Have Productivity Apps for Knowledge Workers

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

Productivity apps have become necessary for anyone who has to compile research or keep information manageable. While crowdsourcing reviews from App store users is helpful, most users don’t offer more insight into apps than a hasty sentence. Productivity apps don’t seem so productive when you have to sift through blogs to find impartial, detailed reviews.

I spend a lot of time researching and testing apps. It’s time well spent for me, as it informs my work and gives me access to the best of what’s available. Here, in no particular order, are my three must-have productivity apps for knowledge workers:

evernote

1) Evernote: Alright. If this list were in order, this App would sit at the top. Lots of you probably already use Evernote on your desktop or online. It’s a simple, freemium program that allows you to clip and paste information from anywhere (ie. webpages, PDFs, Power Points) and add tabs. Evernote also has a free browser button that will clip a whole site along with images and a permalink. Evernote makes the text within your clippings searchable and allows for a filing system of “notebooks.”

There is simply no better way to keep track of everything you stumble across. The Evernote iPhone app lets you take the best of Evernote with you on the go. The clean interface allows you to access and search all of your Evernote notebooks wherever you are, and it’s easy to take notes or add photos using the iPhone camera within the app. It’s hard to overstate how great Evernote is. If I could only have one app on my phone, this would be it. Find out more here. (Available on iPhone/Blackberry/Palm/Android)

snaptell

2) SnapTell: Many of us read a lot for work. Keeping a ‘to-read’ list can be daunting, especially when you need to compare titles and figure out what to buy or borrow.  I often find myself at the bookstore without a pen, staring at a book that would be perfect for me to read for _________ research once I’m done the next few books on my list, and vowing to return and purchase it later. In my experience, later really means never if you can’t note titles on the go. Enter SnapTell, a brilliant app that lets you photograph a book or DVD cover in-app. The app will sift through databases to identify the book by its cover and even give you pricing info from (mostly American) retailers. Reviews are also easily accessible. This app is a great example of the merits of doing one thing really well. (Available on iPhone/Android)

twitterfon

3) Twitterfon: A Twitter app? Productivity? Yes, really. For anyone who monitors brands on Twitter (or follows co-workers *cough*) this app will cut down on your Tweet-reading time. It’s also easily the best Twitter client for those looking to tweet on the go. I keep going back to this app because its simple, easy to use freemium interface is much nicer to interact with than those of other fancier apps. You can follow, unfollow add photos and retweet/reply to your heart’s content in-app. The best feature: it automatically scrolls down to the last tweet read upon launch. (iPhone only)

Happy Hour with Lazare

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

happyhourinvite

We recently started getting involved with the Chicago Creative Club and their planning for the Chicago awards show, “The No Show”, which will be held in September. You can get more info and entry details here. As part of this effort, the committee that is chairing the event has founded SCMA (Second City My Ass) as the first step in a push to revitalize the advertising and creative scene in Chicago, which has gone through a lot. To that end, zig will be hosting a happy hour in cooperation with the Chicago Creative Club and SCMA tonight at 6pm at Lizzie McNeill’s. Call us optimists, but we share SCMA’s viewpoint that we need to celebrate our creativity and create some solidarity. The event has been dubbed “Happy Hour with Lazare?” in honor of Lewis Lazare, the Chicago Sun-Times media and marketing journalist that is constantly challenging the community to get its act together. So, Chicago creatives and agency types, we hope to see you all this evening!

Awesome New Technology : Augmented Reality with Layar

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

I thought I would share this as it is freakin’ cool and will be hitting our market soon with the release of the iPhone 3GS.

One of the new features of the iPhone 3GS is the digital compass.  The combination of camera, compass, and GPS allows the phone to not only know where you are, but what you are looking at.

Enter Layar, described as the world’s first augmented reality browser.

Layar shows you what is around you by displaying realtime digital information on top of reality through the camera of the mobile phone. Just flip through the directory of layers and find ATM’s, bars, houses for sale, hotels and other cool stuff around you.

It is currently in development for Android devices, but they are working hard to port it to other platforms with a prime focus on the iPhone 3GS. The iPhone 3GS is the first iPhone to contain a digital compass which is required for such applications.

Check out the demo!

Very cool and something that we could start leveraging in the not too distant future.

is your favorite show coming back this fall?

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

king_of_the_hill

In the broadcast media negotiations world we have to stay on top of our game.  For television campaigns airing in September, we are negotiating and predicting the success of shows in June.    This means that sometimes we have to predict the future of television programs and how they will succeed in a market.  How do we do that without a crystal ball you ask? There are many ways to look at a new show and estimate its success. Maybe it has great writers and a great pilot episode, but equally important is where the station is planning on placing to place it on its schedule. What day, time period, what are the others stations airing at the same time? Is the show simulcast with the US?  These are all of the things that are analyzed by media negotiators every time a new show is presented to a broadcaster’s schedule. As the broadcasters gear up in the next 2 weeks to present their new Fall schedules, we will keep you updated on the winning picks for success.

Most of your favourites will be returning for another season, however some (for good reason) will not. Programs can be successful in Canada, but flounder in the US. Since a lot of our prime time programs are produced in the US, we are left at the mercy of our American pals and their viewers. Some programs are a big success in their first few seasons, so stations over-air them and audiences slowly dwindle (Deal or No Deal). Some shows have just been mediocre and are “old news”.

Check out the list below for the TV show obituaries. One of them may be your favorite. If you are a fan of MadTV, Christian Slater’s comeback in My Own Worst Enemy, King of the Hill or Prison Break, you will be saddened to read the list below.

IDS09 Toronto: Gillian’s Best Of

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Keeping up with design trends and competitors is one of my favourite things about working on IKEA. This past weekend, I attended IDS09, Toronto’s interior design show. I spent five hours taking pictures, talking to exhibitors and trying to predict which design trends will change the look and feel of our homes in 2009 and beyond.

I also caught a wonderful talk on design blogging, featuring speakers Grace Bonney (of Design*Sponge, Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan (of Apartment Therapy) and Harry Wakefield (of mocoloco). Hearing these bloggers talk about their editorial process was fascinating. The amount of content they produce is staggering, especially considering that as their international following grows, people from all over the globe (and in all different time zones) are expecting new posts.

I thought I’d share some highlights from the exhibitors of IDS09. Be sure to expand the slideshow to see captions for each photo (the following HTML is to embed a FlickR slideshow):

cheetos, the boss dominate halftime conversation

superbowltwittertrack1

The New York Times posted a nice little map overlay of the twitter chatter during the Superbowl. Like most conversations that took place during the course of the game in real-life, the prevalence of terms rose and fell with every touchdown, every interception, and every crotch-first slide into the camera. Unlike the real-life conversations, those that took place on twitter are trackable and measurable.

Even more interesting than the talk of the game itself was the chatter about the commercials. This kind of tracking provides clients with the immediate, tangible impact their ad has made by showing where and how many people are talking about your ad, moments after it airs.

Its true that every day is not the Superbowl, the stage isn’t as large and the audience isn’t as engaged with the ads, still this kind of tracking should be a staple of monitoring your brands. Though it cannot provided you an exact picture of what your entire online and offline audience is saying about you, but it can give you a great indication of what the general perception of your brand is.
